Iran War — Day 18 Deep Dive (March 17, 2026)

Timeline Recap

The 2026 Iran war began February 28 when the US and Israel launched surprise airstrikes across Iran, killing Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and dozens of senior officials. Iran responded with missile and drone strikes against Israel, US bases, and allied Gulf states. The conflict is now in its third week with no ceasefire in sight.

Day 18 Key Developments

Israel Claims Kill on Ali Larijani — Iran Disputes It

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz announced that Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council and effectively the most powerful operational figure in Iran's government, was "eliminated" overnight along with Gholamreza Soleimani, commander of the Basij paramilitary force. These are the highest-profile assassinations since the killing of Ali Khamenei on Day 1.

Iran disputes the claim. State-affiliated Tasnim news agency published a purported handwritten note from Larijani dated March 17, commemorating 84 Iranian sailors killed when the US sank an Iranian naval vessel. Mojtaba Khamenei — Status Unclear

Trump told reporters it's unclear if Iran's new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is "dead or not." Khamenei has not appeared publicly since being named Supreme Leader on March 7 (replacing his assassinated father). His statements have been read by state TV anchors over still photos. He reportedly survived the Feb 28 strike by stepping outside moments before missiles hit, but was injured in the face and foot. Source: Euronews / Times of Israel / Jerusalem Post

US Embassy Baghdad — Most Intense Attack Yet

Rockets and at least five drones were launched at the US embassy in Baghdad's Green Zone in what Iraqi security sources called the most intense attack on the embassy since the war began. The C-RAM defense system intercepted two drones; a third struck inside the compound. A pro-Iranian militia posted drone footage showing a UAV flying low through the compound, weaving between buildings near the American flag. Source: CNN / Al Jazeera

Israel Launches Ground Invasion of Lebanon

Israel began a large-scale ground invasion of southern Lebanon on March 16-17, aiming to seize the entire area south of the Litani River and dismantle Hezbollah's military infrastructure. This is the largest Israeli ground operation in Lebanon since 2006. Heavy fighting ongoing around the strategic town of Khiam. Source: Axios / Al Jazeera

Tehran Under Heavy Bombardment

Large explosions reported in northern Tehran near the Saadabad Palace complex, with additional strikes on Karaj, Shahriar, and Shiraz. Civilian casualties continue to mount — a newborn baby and his two-year-old sister killed in Arak. Source: Al Jazeera

Strait of Hormuz — Escort Coalition Struggling

Trump called on China, Japan, South Korea, France, the UK, and others to send warships to escort commercial shipping through the Strait. No country has publicly agreed. Japan, Australia, and several European allies have explicitly declined. France said it would consider a mission only "when circumstances permit."

A basic escort operation would need 8-10 destroyers to protect convoys of 5-10 ships per transit, which would restore Hormuz traffic to only ~10% of pre-war levels. India's LPG tanker Shivalik successfully transited the strait on March 16 — a closely watched test. Source: Al Jazeera / CNN

Ceasefire Prospects — Dim

Iran's position: FM Araghchi: "We never asked for a ceasefire, and we have never asked even for negotiation." A senior Iranian security official said there is "no scenario for a ceasefire."

Iran's terms: President Pezeshkian demands (1) recognition of Iran's legitimate rights, (2) reparations, and (3) international guarantees against future aggression. These are non-starters for the US/Israel.

Missed opportunity: On Feb 27 — the day before strikes began — Oman's FM announced a "breakthrough" with Iran agreeing to full IAEA verification and no uranium stockpiling. The deal collapsed when strikes began hours later.

Diverging US-Israel goals: Analysts at CNN note Trump may reach a point "much sooner than the Israelis would like" where he tries to end the war, but Israel has signaled it still has "thousands of targets" to hit. Source: NPR / Al Jazeera / CNN

  1. Larijani — alive or dead? If confirmed killed, Iran's operational command structure is severely degraded
  2. Mojtaba Khamenei's first public appearance — until he appears on camera, questions about regime stability persist
  3. Fed meeting Wednesday — Powell's framing of oil-driven inflation will move markets
  4. Hormuz escort coalition — Trump said he "demanded seven countries" join; announcements expected this week
  5. Lebanon ground war escalation — if Israel pushes to the Litani River, Hezbollah's response will shape the next phase
  6. US gas prices at $3.79/gal — political pressure on Trump to find an off-ramp is mounting
